Melbourne Timber & Woodworking Show

Wow. I had no idea what a woodworking show was like. I can’t believe how great it was, and how popular. It seemed really busy; having never been to one before I’ve nothing to compare it too but still, there were just people everywhere.

And the products on show…drool. Some of the stuff is just amazing, CNC machines, lathes & accessories, 3D printers, finishing products… All I expected was a couple of steps up from a trash & treasure market!

I also got to watch a few wood-turning pro’s give a couple shows. Theo Haralampou made a Chupa-Chup (lollipop) holder which was amazing to see. Watching a pro go about their business is enthralling; all the cuts are made for a purpose, everything is so efficient, it makes you realise just how little you know about the craft yourself!

I intended on buying some jaws for my lathe but the cheapest I could find were still over $250. Seeing as I only paid $100 for the lathe I can’t justify that cost yet. I’ll wait until I’m better on it before I spend that sort of cash.

Train Track Bits

I did have one great find though, a set of train track making bits from mcjing.com.au for only $60!

I almost bought this set for over $150 online elsewhere a couple of months ago. So glad I waited!

I actually had no idea that there would be so much wood for sale either. It just never occurred to me. Had I thought about it, I would have raised my budget a fair bit and planned out what I wanted. Ah well, at least I know for next year now.

Phone died after only a few photos :-(

Spent 3 hours there, but wish I could spend another 10 hours at least, great day!

  1. With hindsight, seeing as the very first word in the show name was ‘Timber’ you would think that I would have realised they might just be selling some wood on the day…
